Tile floors with grout can be hard to keep clean because of the dingy appearance that grout sometimes has. Even after extensive mopping, floors with tile grout can still look dirty. While this can be frustrating, you should not give up hope because there are simple and common household items you can use to keep the grout between your tile flooring. Your tiles will look great after following the cleaning tips listed below.

Tips to Clean Dingy Tile Grout

  1. Baking Soda and Vinegar – Mix one part water with three parts baking soda to create a paste that is thick. This paste makes an excellent cleaner that is versatile enough to use on multiple types of tile. If you have marble or limestone tile, you should avoid using this paste as a cleaner because vinegar is notorious for causing damage to these types of tiles. Once you have created a thick paste, use your finger to apply it to the grout lines in your tile floor. It is recommended to use gloves to prevent irritation to the skin.
  2. White Vinegar and Water – Mix equal parts white vinegar with water and spray it on your grout. Bubbling should immediately occur so that you know it is working. When the bubbling action has stopped, proceed to use a strong bristled brush to scrub the tile.
  3. Bleach and Water – Mix two cups of warm water with two tablespoons of oxygenated bleach. Colored grout could be damaged by this mixture, but you can use it on all types of tile, even limestone and marble. Consider testing a hidden part of the grout in your tile to see if discoloration occurs. Pour the bleach and water solution on the grout and let it sit for three to five minutes. Clean sections of the tile at a time to avoid wetting down the entire floor at once. Scrubbing the grout with a nylon bristled brush can help provide optimal results.
  4. Hydrogen Peroxide, Dish Soap, and Baking Soda – Mix one tablespoon of dish soap with three quarters cup of baking soda. Add one fourth of a cup of hydrogen peroxide and mix to create a paste. This paste is effective in cleaning grout and tile in three different ways. While the baking soda natural scrubs grout, the dish soap loosens soaked in grease. Also, the hydrogen peroxide will interact with the baking soda to release bleaching ions. Use a toothbrush to apply the mixture to your tile and grout and let it sit for five to eight minutes. Using a scrub brush, scrub the tile and grout clean. Use water to rinse the mixture completely away before mopping your floors as usual.
