Textured ceilings were common in houses built decades ago, and many owners in Okanagan Falls now want them gone: they collect dust, hold cobwebs, show water marks and make any room feel lower. Taking them off is a big improvement, but it needs a careful start.
The first thing we ask is not about colour. It is the age of the house, because the answer decides whether the ceiling must be tested before anything is scraped.
What the removal process involves
- Confirming the age of the house and arranging a test when it is warranted
- Masking the room fully, including floors, vents and fixtures
- Wetting and scraping the texture in controlled sections
- Skim coating or sanding to a flat, paintable ceiling
- Fixing the damage the texture was hiding, such as old tape lines
- Priming and painting the finished ceiling
Why testing comes first
Textured ceilings in older homes can contain asbestos. We do not guess. If your Okanagan Falls house falls into an age range where that is possible, we plan a lab test before scraping and we go no further until we have the result. That protects you, your family and anyone working in the house.
If the test is clear, the job moves ahead the way a normal dust-heavy renovation task would. If it is not, we talk you through the options and the removal does not start until you decide. Either way, we would rather lose a day to testing than put anyone at risk to save one.
Good planning also covers the rest of the house. We set up so that dust stays in the work area, switch off or cover vents, and protect floors and furniture in adjoining rooms. Pets and small children should be somewhere else during scraping days, and we tell you the timing ahead so you can arrange it.

Our plan for a flat ceiling
- Age and test. We find out when the house was built and, if needed, collect a sample for testing before we agree on a start date.
- Seal the room. Plastic goes up over floors, doors and openings, and the area is set up to keep dust from travelling.
- Scrape and skim. Texture comes off in sections, and the ceiling is then skimmed and sanded until it reads flat under a raking light.
- Prime and paint. A stain-blocking primer and two coats of ceiling paint finish the job, followed by a full clean-up.

Popcorn Ceiling Removal in Okanagan Falls: questions
Why does the age of my house matter?
Older textured ceilings may contain asbestos, so the age tells us whether a test comes first. We ask it at the very start of the quote.
Is it messy?
It is one of the messier jobs, which is why we mask the room carefully and clean as we go. Some dust will still need a final wipe-down, and we do that before leaving.
Is it cheaper to just paint over the texture?
Painting over it is quicker, but the texture stays. If you want the ceiling flat, removal is the only route, and we can compare both approaches in the quote.
