Popcorn ceilings were a cheap way to hide rough drywall work, and many older houses still wear them. They hold dust, they catch cobwebs, they look dark when you try to brighten a room, and a single stain is almost impossible to touch up. People ask us about removal when they are repainting a living room and realise the ceiling is the part dragging it down.
Before we talk about methods, we talk about age. A textured ceiling in an older home can contain asbestos, and no one should scrape it without knowing. So the first questions we ask a Kaleden homeowner are when the house was built and whether the ceiling has ever been tested.
What removal involves
- Confirming the home’s age and arranging a lab test of the texture before any scraping begins
- Covering floors, walls and everything in the room with plastic so mess does not travel
- Dampening the ceiling and scraping the texture away in a controlled way
- Skim coating or sanding to a flat finish, depending on how the drywall underneath looks
- Priming the bare ceiling so the new paint covers evenly
- Painting the ceiling in a flat, low-reflect finish that hides small flaws
Old cottages, new ideas
A lot of the older places around Kaleden have never been fully redone, and their ceilings are often the original texture. That gives you a good reason to pick the sequence carefully. Test first, decide second. If the test is clean we can proceed; if it is positive we stop, explain your options and you can arrange proper abatement rather than risking exposure.
When removal is a go, there is a bonus waiting under the texture. Ceilings in rooms with lake views look much taller and brighter once the shadows from the popcorn are gone, and a flat white surface carries daylight from the windows deeper into the room. Many owners tell us they should have done it years earlier, and the repaint finishes the job.

Our removal sequence
- Ask and test. We learn the age of the home and arrange sampling. Nothing is wet, scraped or sanded until the result is back.
- Seal the room. Plastic goes up on the walls and floor, vents are taped off and furniture is removed or wrapped so the room is contained.
- Scrape and smooth. The texture is softened and taken off, and the ceiling is then skimmed or sanded until it is flat and clean.
- Prime and paint. A primer coat locks down the surface, followed by finish coats. We remove the plastic and clean the room after your sign-off.

Popcorn Ceiling Removal in Kaleden: questions
What happens if the sample comes back positive?
We stop and do not scrape. You can leave the ceiling as is, paint over it carefully, or hire a specialist for removal. We can quote the repaint afterward.
Is it very messy?
Done properly, it is contained. We wet the texture to hold dust down and use plastic to keep the rest of the house clean. There is still a lot of debris to bag and carry out.
Will the ceiling be perfectly smooth?
It can get close. Flatness depends on the drywall underneath, and some joints will need skim coating. We discuss how smooth you want it before the job starts.
