If the cabinet boxes are sound and the layout works, the cheapest way to change a kitchen is usually the finish. Painted cabinets can look like a new kitchen, but only when the surface is degreased, sanded and primed correctly. Skip those steps and the paint chips at the handles within a few months.
We paint kitchen cabinets, bathroom vanities, built-ins and laundry-room units across West Kelowna. Each quote lists the doors, drawer fronts and boxes included, the hardware plan, and how long the kitchen will be out of action.
What goes into a cabinet refinish
- Doors and drawer fronts removed, numbered and painted flat
- Cabinet boxes and face frames prepared in place
- Degreasing, because kitchen cabinets carry cooking residue
- Sanding and bonding primer before the finish coats
- Hinges and pulls removed, then reinstalled or swapped for new
- Soft-close or hardware changes if you want them done together
Why homeowners here refinish rather than replace
Plenty of West Kelowna houses on the hillsides above the lake have cabinets that are solid but dated: honey oak, orange stain, worn white laminate. The layout works and the wood is fine, so the fresh look comes from the finish, not a gut renovation.
Cabinets are also one of the more demanding surfaces in the home. They take steam, grease and daily hand contact, so the coating has to be harder than ordinary wall paint. We use a coating sold for cabinets and trim, and we tell you how long to wait before putting heavy loads back on shelves.
Before we start, we agree on the finish colour with a sample door, not a paint chip, because cabinet colour looks different under kitchen lighting. We also check that the hinges and doors still hang square, since a painted door that sticks will chip along its edge sooner than one that closes freely.

What happens in the kitchen
- Mark and remove. Doors and drawers come off, each is numbered so it returns to its own opening, and hardware goes in labelled bags.
- Clean and sand. Every surface is degreased and scuffed so the primer bonds, and dings are filled and sanded flat.
- Prime and coat. A bonding primer goes on first, followed by finish coats sanded lightly between layers.
- Cure and reinstall. Paint needs time to harden, so we hang the doors only once they are ready, adjust the hinges and walk you through care.

Cabinet Painting in West Kelowna: questions
Can laminate or thermofoil cabinets be painted?
Often yes, with the right bonding primer, but peeling thermofoil needs to come off first. We check a door at the quote and tell you honestly if the surface is a poor candidate.
How long will I be without my doors?
The doors are typically away from the house while they are coated and cured, and we give you a day count in the quote. Boxes stay in place, so you can keep using the kitchen sink and counters.
Will brush marks show?
A well-sprayed or carefully rolled finish levels out smooth. We describe the application method in the quote so you know what finish to expect.
