Why low-odour paint is worth asking for
Fresh paint smells because solvents and other compounds evaporate into the air as it dries. Lower-emission products reduce that, which makes life easier for people who live and sleep in the house while we work.
It matters most in bedrooms, nurseries and small closed rooms. If anyone at home has asthma, allergies or sensitivities, ask for a low-VOC product at the quoting stage. Our general eco-friendly paint guide covers the basics.
Choosing products for walls, ceilings and trim
Most interior walls and ceilings can use water-based low-VOC paint. Modern lines are washable, hard-wearing and come in a full range of colours. Read the technical data sheet, since it lists VOC content, recoat time and clean-up.
Trim, doors and cabinets need a harder finish. Water-based enamels have improved a lot and suit many jobs. Ask your painter what goes on each surface. Primers, caulks and fillers also add smell, so low-odour versions help.

Ventilation in Kelowna homes
Airflow is the simplest way to clear fumes. In summer you can open windows on opposite sides of a room for a cross-breeze. In winter it is colder, so we air out the room in short bursts, run bathroom or range fans, and keep heating steady so paint cures properly.
Even low-VOC paint gives off a little vapour while it cures. Plan to keep the rooms ventilated for a few days, and consider using a different bedroom the first night or two if you are sensitive.
Painting while you live there
We often work in occupied homes. A few habits make it more comfortable for everyone.
- Work room by room so you always have a clean space.
- Close doors and use plastic barriers to contain dust and smell.
- Keep kitchens usable by painting them in a planned block.
- Schedule bedrooms so you can air them out before bed.
- Keep children away from wet paint, tools and ladders.
- Tell us about any health concerns before we start.
Kids, pets and allergies
Children and pets spend time close to floors and walls, and they chew and touch things. Keep them out of the work area until paint is dry and the room is aired. Store tins, brushes and rags out of reach.
If someone has a serious allergy or chemical sensitivity, talk to your doctor and your painter. We can look at product data sheets with you and choose options with the lowest emissions that still do the job.

Leftover paint and recycling in BC
Do not pour paint down a drain or onto the ground. BC has a paint recycling program run through Product Care, which accepts unwanted paint. Check the Product Care website or call them to find out where and how to return it.
The best waste reduction is buying the right amount. Seal leftover tins tightly, label them with the room and colour, and keep them from freezing. Small amounts can be used up on touch-ups.
Does low-odour paint last?
Yes, when it is applied over well-prepared surfaces. Prep, primer and coats matter more than the label. A properly cleaned, patched and primed wall will hold up better than a poorly prepped wall with premium paint.
If you want a low-odour plan for your interior painting project, tell us when you ask for a free written quote and we will note the product choice in the scope.
Frequently asked questions
Is low-VOC paint safe to use in a bedroom?
Low-VOC and low-odour products are a good choice for bedrooms, but all paint needs time to cure. Ventilate well and, if you are sensitive, consider sleeping elsewhere for the first night or two.
Where do I take leftover paint in BC?
BC has a paint recycling program through Product Care. Check their website or call them to confirm what they accept and where to return it, rather than pouring paint out or binning liquid paint.
Can you paint while my family is home?
Yes. We work room by room, contain dust and smell with closed doors and barriers, and plan bedrooms so they can be aired out before bedtime. Tell us about any health concerns first.
