Decks and fences take the worst of the weather, with sun on top, rain and sprinklers underneath and feet on them all summer. When the finish gives up, grey wood and cracks are not far behind.

We restore and recoat outdoor wood in a set order: clean first, repair second, finish last. The quote names which boards or rails need replacing before any stain goes on.

The order of the work matters outdoors. We start with the deck floor or fence face that gets the most wear, then work towards the edges, so any drips or overspray land on bare wood that is still to be coated rather than a finished surface.

Lake views and exposed decks

Surrounding plants and the house wall are protected with drop sheets while we work. We also keep a watch on the forecast, since a rain shower in the first hours after a coat can leave marks that have to be redone.

Getting the wood ready

Inspect. We check for rot, loose boards and protruding nails, and list repairs in the written quote.
Clean and dry. Pressure washing removes dirt and old failing coating, and the wood must dry out before anything is applied.
Sand and spot repair. Splinters and rough patches are sanded smooth and weak boards are fixed or swapped.
Finish. Stain or paint goes on in thin, even coats, and we mark off the area until it is safe to walk on.

Stain lets the grain show and is easier to refresh. Solid paint covers worn boards and gives a more uniform colour but can peel if water gets under it.

How soon can we walk on a freshly coated deck?

Can an old fence be saved or does it need replacing?

If posts are solid and boards are only weathered, cleaning and recoating can bring it back. Rotten posts mean a repair job before any paint.
