Decks and fences are the parts of a property that never get a break. They sit in full sun, hold snow, and get walked on, leaned on and splashed. In Lake Country, where outdoor living is a big reason people own here, a worn deck is the first thing a visitor notices. We clean, repair and recoat decks and fences so the wood is protected again.
The free written quote measures each deck and fence run and states whether we are staining, painting or sealing, and how many coats.
What we do to wood outdoors
- Washing off grey, mould and old coating residue
- Stripping or sanding where the old finish has failed
- Setting popped nails or screws and flagging boards that should be replaced
- Staining or painting rails, balusters, posts and stairs by hand where a sprayer would miss
- Coating the top surface, edges and where possible the underside of boards
- Fence panels, gates and posts, with dry time planned between sides
Sun, lake spray and wood that dries fast
Lake Country homes sit beside Wood Lake and Kalamalka Lake, and a deck with a lake view usually has no shade at all. Direct sun dries wood quickly, which is good for drying time but hard on a finish that was put on too thick or too fast. We work in manageable sections so the stain soaks in and does not skin over.
Horizontal surfaces take the most punishment. Fence faces can often wait another season, but a deck floor with bare patches should not, because water gets in at exactly those spots and starts to lift the grain. We prioritise by wear and tell you which parts of the job are urgent.
Landscaping around the structure needs protection as well. We lay out cover for plants and stone edges before washing begins, and we tell you if a bed needs trimming back for access.
Weather decides the start date. Wood must be dry and the air warm enough for the product, and rain in the forecast can ruin a fresh coat, so we watch several days ahead and book the work for a stable window.

A deck job in four moves
- Assess the wood. We press on boards and railings, find soft spots and tell you what needs replacing before we coat anything.
- Clean and dry. The surface is washed and allowed to dry fully, because coating damp wood traps moisture.
- Sand and coat. Rough areas are sanded, then the stain or paint goes on with brushes and rollers, working along the grain.
- Cure and review. We tell you how long to keep furniture off, then check the finish with you and touch up.

Fence and Deck Painting in Lake Country: questions
Should I paint or stain my deck?
Stain soaks in and wears gradually, so it recoats more easily. Paint forms a film that hides more but can peel on walking surfaces if prep is skipped. We explain the trade-off at the quote.
How often does a deck need recoating?
It depends on exposure and the product. A fully sunlit deck wears faster than a shaded one, and we suggest a light yearly look rather than waiting for bare wood.
Can the fence be done on the neighbour’s side as well?
Only with the neighbour’s agreement. We can sort out access with you, and the quote shows each side as a separate line.
