An exterior paint job lives or dies on what happens before the first coat. On a Naramata house we start by washing the siding, scraping anything loose, sanding the rough edges and replacing failed caulk, because paint only holds on a surface that is clean, sound and dry.
The village sits on the east side of Okanagan Lake with vineyards and orchards around it, and many of the houses have long sun-facing walls and open decks. Those faces take the heaviest weathering, so we look at them first when we come out to write your free written quote.
Outside surfaces we paint
- Siding of wood, fibre cement, vinyl-safe paints and stucco
- Fascia, soffits, eaves and gable trim
- Window frames, door frames and front doors
- Railings, posts and porch trim
- Garage doors and detached garages or sheds
- Scraping, caulking and priming bare or chalky areas ahead of the topcoat
Timing the work around the weather
Exterior latex generally should not go on below about 10 C, and the temperature of the wall matters as much as the air, so a cold morning can wreck a coat that looked fine at lunch. We check the product data sheet for the minimum and plan the work in the warmer part of the year, which also means booking ahead rather than hoping for a gap.
Sun-baked and wind-exposed walls dry out and lose their film first, so we often find the south and west sides need more prep than the sheltered ones. If you want to see how the full job is put together, the exterior painting page walks through each stage.
Colour choice outside is a long commitment, so we suggest taping up large samples on a couple of different walls and checking them through a full day. Trim and door colours should be looked at beside the siding, not on their own, because a contrast that looks right on a chip can read very differently across a whole house.

What happens on site
- Wash and inspect. Dirt, chalk and loose paint come off first. Any rot or damaged boards get flagged to you before we paint over them.
- Scrape, sand, caulk. Failing paint is scraped back, edges are feathered, and open joints around trim and windows are sealed.
- Prime the trouble spots. Bare wood, stains and patched areas get primer so the topcoat dries evenly.
- Topcoat and walk-around. Two coats go on in suitable conditions, then we walk the outside with you, touch up, and clear our gear.
The full process, prep and pricing factors are on our main exterior painting page.
Exterior Painting in Naramata: questions
Can you paint in the rain or on a damp morning?
No. Wet or damp surfaces stop paint from bonding, so we wait for the siding to dry and push the day if we have to.
Will you cover my plants and windows?
Yes. Shrubs, patio furniture, windows and fixtures are covered or masked before we wash or spray, and we remove the coverings when the work is done.
Why does the quote mention the age of my house?
Older paint may contain lead. Health Canada says it is probable before 1960 and possible from 1960 to 1990, so we plan testing before scraping or sanding.
